Questions asked in the community will likely receive an answer within 4 hours! These suggestions do not help. It is so frustrating that I think I will delete my dropbox files since I cannot get to them. If I have to run it in the background, then it takes too long to run my computer. I cannot even download them once I am on Word online, as it automatically saves them back to dropbox.

I am so frustratedand will rely on other cloud software. I have used this so long, but now it suddenly creates more havoc that it is worth. I am having issues as well. Never had any problems before opening files so it is on Dropboxes end!

These files are highly important and if this is not resolved soon I will be forced to use someone else. I have over 85, files and can't open a lot of them. Rename the file to use a shorter name or copy it to a different folder with a shorter path". Tried both options and still nothing Sometimes if I drag the file to my desktop it will open then I am unable to put the file back where I need it! Even if a rename the file with even 2 characters it still does not work.

Please help. Hey there Jeremy H. Walter Community Moderator Dropbox dropbox. I have the same problem. I am running MacOS Catalina, and dropbox I use selective sync. The problem comes when I try to open a file that is not synced to my desktop, but only to the cloud. Whenever I try to do this, the application that is trying to open it will freeze and become non-responsive. Another problem which I'm not sure is related or not, is that my files do not seem to sync.

The icon in the tray will read "syncing 45 files, 2 hours remaining" but nothing changes and it will display the same message until I kill it, and re-open.

Then, and only then, will some of the files that have been syncing appear on my desktop. This has only recently become a problem, but it is seriously impeding my ability to use my files.

How big is this Zip file? Dropbox is known to have problems creating Zip files larger than 1GB or so. Otherwise you may be out of luck. I tried your advice but had no luck.

I tried using 7zip and winRAR, and got the same error in 7zip and a similar message on winRAR "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged". I removed some of the files from dropbox over 6 months ago, do you think dropbox would be able to restore the file somehow so I can try download it again maybe in smaller folders? Same here. Only, my compressed folders are from 1 to MB.

Not very large I can't open any of the files when extracted, all broken. Pictures, txt files, pdf files, html files, mp3 files, nothing opens I have the same problem. A zip file full of mp3s, "damaged".

Dropbox team! Please offer a solution! A strange thing happed to me I've kept the broken zip archives - and they all work now, four weeks later.

I tried extracting one file at a time and all at once and it works, no problems whatsoever. Maybe you should try extracting one file at a time from the broken archive or something like that, or change the OS xD. Thanks so much for this answer. It worked for me and i have recovered hundreds of photos from my travels. If you are ever in nz let me know and i will buy you a beer!

Big shout out to mactorque who sorted it for me since i can hardly even turn a Mac on! Its crazy that dropbox was not able to help with this issue. Before you posted this I managed to get in touch with dropbox customer support which took a bit of hunting! So file compression is often seen as one of the best solutions for sending bigger data.

You can also use ZIP files to encrypt private data before sending it online. Create a new folder with only the files you wish to compress. You may only want to compress certain files in a folder but not the entire folder. To do this, hold down the Command key and then click on whichever files you want zipped.

Click that, and your compressed file will save to your desktop. You can do this on any Windows computer operating Windows 8. To uncompress a zip file on Mac, double-click on it. On Windows, you can view the contents of a ZIP folder without unzipping it. You might already have a zipped folder that you need to add more files to.

Drag the new files or folders on to the ZIP file, like you would if you were adding a file to a regular folder. These files are now added to your ZIP file. There are always security risks whenever you use a third-party service. There are some third-party archivers like WinZip that are pretty well trusted, but they're not without some risk. With that in mind, the safest way to add new files to a zip folder on Mac would be to create a new zip file from scratch. It is possible to password protect ZIP files to some extent with Windows For Mac users, your options are more limited.

This is quite a complicated and, considering the other options available, unnecessary process.
